Kazakhstan signs deals for 1GW wind farms with Masdar and ACWA

Major energy companies from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia have signed deals advancing plans for 1GW wind farms in Kazakhstan.

Saudi private energy company ACWA signed a "roadmap" agreement for a 1GW wind farm with Kazakhstan’s ministry of energy, the Kazakh Investment Development Fund, and the Samruk-Kazyna sovereign wealth fund. It explained that the agreement provides "a clear direction for the formalisation of processes and paving the way for construction".

It will also explore developing a battery storage system alongside the wind farm.

ACWA claimed the planned $1.5 billion project would represnt the biggest ever Saudi investment in Kazakhstan’s power sector.

Meanwhile, UAE state-owned renewables developer Masdar announced on Monday (12 June) it had also signed a roadmap agreement with the same three bodies to develop a 1GW wind farm in Kazakhstan. It had previously announced its intentions to develop the wind farm in the central Asian country in January.

Masdar will also build a battery energy storage system alongside the wind farm.
