Polish utility PGE secures more seabed leases for Baltic Sea offshore wind

Polish state-run utility PGE has provisionally secured two seabed leases to develop offshore wind farms in the Polish Baltic sea.

The first of the new leases – site 44.E.1 – is around 48km off the Polish coast. The company plans to build a wind farm with a capacity of up to 975MW in the 121km2 site.

The second, smaller site – 60.E.4 – is located near PGE’s planned 900MW Baltica 1 wind farm, and could host a 555MW offshore wind farm, the utility believes.

Other bidders have 14 days to appeal the awards ahead of a final decision.

The new leases provisionally granted to PGE are in addition to two other seabed leases in the region the company was awarded earlier this year.

Overall the state-owned utility plans to develop approximately 6.5GW of wind energy projects in the region.

Poland currently lacks installed offshore wind capacity but has already contracted over 5.9GW of offshore wind in the Baltic Sea. It is set to hold contracts for difference tenders in 2025 and 2027, in a bid to have 11GW of offshore wind capacity online by 2040 and to wean itself off coal.
