Polish state-run utility PGE Group has provisionally secured the rights to develop offshore wind farms at a second site in the Polish Baltic Sea that it believes could support more than 1.1GW of capacity.
The Polish infrastructure ministry has provisionally granted PGE a location permit for the 118km2 area, 60.E.3, which is located 78km north of Łeba. Other bidders have 14 days to appeal the award ahead of a final decision.
PGE intends to name the planned 1,185MW site in 60.E.3 Baltica 1+, as it would be built adjacent to its under-development 896MW Baltica 1 offshore wind farm.
The utility had previously secured a seabed lease for the 43.E.1 site in Poland’s ongoing seabed leasing round, and is also bidding for a further four sites.
Poland currently lacks offshore wind capacity, but it has contracted just over 5.9GW of offshore wind in the Baltic Sea – including wind farms being developed by PGE.
It is set to hold contracts for difference tenders in 2025 and 2027, in a bid to have 11GW of offshore wind capacity online by 2040 and to wean itself off coal.
