Nordic developer OX2 and Finnish investor Ålandsbanken Fondbolag are planning a second large offshore wind farm, taking their shared pipeline off the coast of Finland to at least 8GW.
The companies plan to build a wind farm comprising 360-370 turbines north of the island of Åland, which is located off the mainland’s south-west coast.
They had earlier announced plans for a project of the same size located south of Åland.
OX2 stated that each project could have a capacity of 4-5GW, would be located 30km from the shore and could be commissioned early next decade.
The Nordic renewables firm – which is also targeting gigawatt-scale offshore wind farms off neighbouring Sweden – believes the projects could produce 40TWh per year, or enough to power 8 million Finnish households.
Finland only has a , so the developers are considering distributing electricity to Sweden and Estonia, as well as Finland.
The developers still need to secure project permits for the projects.
News of OX2 and Ålandsbanken plans for large-scale Finnish offshore wind follows to Finland after the Nordic nation applied to join NATO.
OX2 is also exploring the potential for large-scale offshore wind projects in the Gulf of Bothnia, but it will face competition, as German developer Wpd is also exploring one of the the same sites.
