UK asks industry how to spend £160m on floating wind

The UK government has launched a £160 million (€188 million) fund to boost floating offshore wind capacity.

It has called for the industry to submit expressions of interest in the floating offshore wind manufacturing investment scheme. The department for business, energy and industrial strategy (BEIS) has suggested that the money could go towards deepwater port infrastructure and help to support private investment in new factories to produce wind farm components.

The government has also selected Tim Pick as the UK’s first offshore wind champion.

Pick was previously head of energy, resources and infrastructure at law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer before retiring, and spent more than 25 years advising companies developing energy projects in the UK, eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. In his new role, he will chair a taskforce for accelerating offshore wind deployment, which will consist of companies across the sector so they can coordinate their activities.

The UK aims to have 5GW floating offshore wind capacity by 2030.
