Colombian petrochemicals producer Monómeros SA has signed a memorandum of understanding with power utility Alumbrado Público de Barranquilla (APBAQ) to use offshore wind energy to produce green hydrogen.
Under the plan, Monómeros would then convert the hydrogen into green ammonia to replace the ammonia it currently imports as a raw material for its fertiliser plants.
APBAQ has already signed a deal with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to develop Colombia’s first offshore wind farm off the country’s Caribbean coast which could enter operations in 2026.
Monómeros said it plans to produce 100,000 metric tonnes of green ammonia annually, allowing it to boost fertiliser production and have enough to export.
