Steel giant ArcelorMittal plans to build nearly 1GW of wind and solar capacity. Backed by a pumped hydro project, it would provide ‘round the clock’ power for a plant in India.
The $600 million wind-solar project is planned for a site in Andhra Pradesh. As-yet, the wind-solar split is unclear.
ArcelorMittal would own the project, while developer Greenko Group would design, construct and operate it.
The wind and solar capacity would be backed by Greenko’s 250MW pumped hydro storage project, to help overcome the variable nature of wind and solar generation, ArcelorMittal explained.
This ‘round the clock’ power would supply electricity to ArcelorMittal’s Indian joint venture company with Japanese metals group, Nippon Steel. It would help to meet more than 20% of the electricity requirements of its plant in Hazira, Gujarat, lower costs and cut emissions from its Indian operations, the steelmaker explained.
Project commissioning is expected by mid-2024.
