Vestas has secured a deal to supply its onshore wind turbines to two Belgian wind farms due to power steel production and a logistics hub for the automotive industry.
It will supply a range of turbine models to two projects being developed by Belgian wind developer and owner-operator Storm in the industrial harbour of Ghent.
The manufacturer has been contracted to supply three of its V162-6.0MW EnVentus turbines and three V150-4.2MW turbines, two of which will be operating in 4.3MW power mode, to the 18MW Haven Gent - ArcelorMittal phase 3b wind farm.
It will be the first time Vestas’ EnVentus turbines have been installed in Belgium. The turbines will also be the largest onshore turbines installed in the country.
All the turbines will be equipped with Vestas’ anti-icing system to improve power production in cold climate conditions.
The wind farm will power ArcelorMittal’s steel manufacturing plant in Ghent through a 20-year corporate power purchase agreement.
Vestas will also deliver one V136-4.2MW turbine to the 4.2MW Honda Gent wind farm, which will power automobile company Honda Motor Europe’s logistics centre in Ghent.
The Danish manufacturer will supply, install and commission turbines at both sites. It will also service them for 20 years.
Turbine deliveries are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2021. Commissioning of both projects is planned for the second quarter of 2022.
