Siemens Gamesa has signed a contract to supply Iberdrola’s 66MW Iglesias wind farm in northern Spain with its 5.X turbines. It is the first turbine supply deal the manufacturer has signed for the platform with the Spanish energy giant.
Siemens Gamesa said Iberdrola is due to be the first developer to deploy its 5.X platform in Spain and that it will be the most powerful turbine Iberdrola has ever installed at one of its Spanish wind farms.
The European manufacturer will supply 14 of its SG 6.6-170 and two of its SG 5.0-145 turbines.
The first 14 turbines will operate at a nominal capacity of 6.0MW, and will each have a 170-meter rotor.
One of these turbines will be enough to provide clean energy to 5,000 households, while the 94MW the wind farm will eventually produce will power more than 75,000 households – more than half the entire population of the province of Burgos, where it is located – Siemens Gamesa claimed.
The company said the total energy output of the Iglesias wind farm would avoid the emission of 250,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, equivalent to the emissions from 150,000 vehicles.
The wind farm is scheduled to be commissioned in early 2023 and the turbine contract includes a five-year service agreement.
The nacelles for the turbines will be manufactured at the Siemens Gamesa’s plant in Ágreda, northern Spain, which it said would “boost the activity” of its Spanish suppliers.
The company said its Spanish suppliers would also be involved in the production of various components including the turbine towers, but it did not specify which others would be manufactured locally.
Lars Bondo Krogsgaard, the turbine manufacturer’s onshore chief executive, said: “Siemens Gamesa has made many firsts in Spain working in partnership with Iberdrola. This first is also special as it marks a debut for the Siemens Gamesa 5.X platform in the country, and can provide a real boost to the country’s energy transition.”
