US renewables developer Invenergy is targeting a European offshore wind debut having entered the ScotWind leasing round with floating solutions specialist BW Offshore.
The two companies formed a joint venture to bid for leases that could support up to 5.4GW of new offshore wind capacity.
They hope to build offshore wind farms featuring both bottom-fixed foundations and floating platforms off the north-east coast of Scotland.
Scotland’s offshore wind leasing round closed for submissions in July, and the regulator is expected to announce the results in early 2022.
Invenergy has helped to develop more than 29GW of renewable energy capacity worldwide – all of it onshore. However, it is also pre-qualified to bid for an offshore wind lease off New York in the US.
Its senior executive cice President and construction business leader, Bryan Schueler said: “We are uniquely positioned to deliver innovative offshore wind infrastructure to Scotland through leveraging Invenergy’s decades of experience, expertise in leading complex projects to completion and network of strategic supplier relationships such as with GE Renewable Energy."
Meanwhile, BW Offshore provides floating solutions for the oil and gas industry, and is experienced in offshore engineering, procurement, construction and installation.
Competition in the ScotWind tender will be tough.
Trios of TotalEnergies, the Green Investment Group and the Renewable Infrastructure Development Group, SSE Renewables, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Marubeni Corporation and Ørsted, Falck Renewables and BlueFloat Energy, pairings of Vattenfall and Fred Olsen Renewables, BP and German utility EnBW, ScottishPower and Shell, Simply Blue Energy and Subsea 7, Ideol and Aker Solutions, as well as Eni and Red Rock Power had also all announced their intention to bid. RWE and Equinor have also submitted standalone bids.
The Crown Estate Scotland is expected to announce the results of this round of ScotWind leasing in early 2022.
