Vattenfall plans to build a new large-scale warehouse facility to store main components and spare parts for its wind farms in the UK, Scandinavia and northern Europe.
It will store gearboxes, generators, transformers, shafts, blades, array cables and switchgear at the facility in the Danish port of Esbjerg.
The storage facility on the west coast of Denmark’s Jutland peninsula will include a 2,100m2 indoor warehouse and an 8,200m2 outdoor storage facility.
It will supplement rather than replace dedicated warehouses that already serve individual wind farms, Vattenfall added.
Vattenfall’s head of integrated operations Pia Bonding said the warehouse’s central location in northern Europe made it ideally suited to serve the developer’s wind farms in the region.
She added that having a larger facility would create economies of scale compared to having components stores at several smaller locations.
It is unclear how much the warehouse will cost.
Construction will begin at the end of June and is expected to last ten months. The warehouse will then be stocked and made ready for operation in June 2022.
Thyborøn Invest will pay for, build, own and lease out the facility to Vattenfall. The company has previously gained experience in delivering similar warehouses for wind farms.
