Chinese turbine manufacturer MingYang has stepped into the European offshore wind market, replacing Senvion as turbine supplier for a 30MW wind farm off the coast of Italy.
It is the first Chinese manufacturer to secure a supply deal for a European offshore wind farm, according to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Intelligence.
The 30MW Beleolico offshore wind project was granted construction consent in 2013. Its turbine supplier Senvion dissolved in 2019, selling most of its European assets to rival Siemens Gamesa.
However, MingYang Smart Energy has today announced that it will supply ten of its MySE3.0-135 wind turbines for the offshore project located 100m off the harbour of Taranto in Italy.
The order by Italian developer Renexia, marks the first major offshore wind project to be built in the Mediterranean Sea and a “key milestone” for MingYang as it enters the European offshore wind market.
The project is entirely financed by a branch of the French investment bank Natixis but sums have not be disclosed. Turbine deliveries are expected to start in the summer ahead of project commissioning by the end of the year, according to MingYang.
Working with MingYang, Renexia is currently developing one the world's largest offshore wind farm off the state of Maryland in the US, and developing Italy's first floating wind farm in Sicily.
