MingYang black-starts new offshore turbine

MingYang Smart Energy has successfully tested black-start capabilities of its new MySE7.25-158 offshore turbine at an onshore test site in Guangdong, south-east China.

MingYang tested the black-start capabilities of its new turbine in Jieyang, Guangdong

Black-start capability allows for restoring electricity generation without relying on external electric power transmission.

The turbine manufacturer explained that this capability will provide operators with more flexibility, which will be particularly useful for projects in Asia that are at risk of being hit by typhoons.

A prototype of its MySE7.25-158 has been operating since February 2019.

“As many offshore wind farms are located in areas affected by typhoons, offshore wind turbines with the capability of black start have great potential on offering flexibility to wind farm operators in the event of failure,” MingYang stated.

It had successfully tested black start capability of one of its turbines at a laboratory in the Netherlands in July 2019.
