Vestas is installing a V162-6.0MW prototype at a test site in Denmark and will now offer turbines from its EnVentus platform with a standard power rating of 6MW.
The new V162-6.0MW turbine is being erected at the Østerild National test centre for large wind turbines in western Jutland, Denmark, next to the V150-5.6MW prototype that has already been installed and upgraded to 6.0MW
Installation will be completed by mid-October and will be followed by an extensive test and verification programme to ensure reliability before serial production, which is due to start in Q2 2021.
Vestas has improved load assessments and upgraded the generator, gearbox and cooling system hardware to boost the platform’s power rating, the manufacturer explained.
The V162-6.0MW turbine also has a rotor diameter 12 metres larger than that of the V150-5.6MW model – the largest rotor size of any turbine in the company’s portfolio.
The manufacturer claimed this will enable the turbine to maximise energy production at low- to medium-wind sites. Depending on site conditions, the V162-6.0MW will have annual energy production 3% greater than the V150-5.6MW, Vestas stated.
It has a tip height of up to 250 metres and a rotor-swept area of more than 20,000m2.
Vestas introduced the EnVentus platform in 2019 and has since received more than 1GW of orders. It will now offer turbines from the platform with a standard power rating of 6MW, it added.
A spokesman told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç: "The previously secured orders in 5.6 MW will not automatically be upgraded, but it is a possibility. Currently, the turbines are not offered with power optimised mode above 6.0 MW. "
