Dongfang due to install China's first 10MW turbine

Chinese OEM Dongfang is set to claim victory in the race to install the country’s first operational 10MW offshore turbine.

A prototype of the direct-drive, typhoon-resistant, 185-metre rotor design is currently being dispatched to the Fujian Xinghua Bay phase 2 demonstration site off the south-east coast of the country.

The most powerful turbine on that site is an 8MW Goldwind prototype, installed in late April.

Dongfang’s D10000-185 prototype is the first of eight of pre-production models, as the company looks to scale up to 12-15MW and rotor diameters of 230 metres.

It is one of four companies currently offering 10MW-plus turbines. Siemens Gamesa recently unveiled its SG 14-222 model, MHI Vestas has its V164-10.0MW, and GE offers the 12MW Haliade-X.
