The eight companies — from backgrounds including Formula One, robotics and oil and gas — had all been supported by the TUS-ORE Catapult Research Centre (TORC), an innovation partnership between Chinese clean energy company Tus Wind and UK innovation specialists ORE Catapult.
They have now signed agreements to develop and provide renewable energy technologies, services and research in China.
Oxford-based Anakata Wind Power Resources — which has previously offered aerodynamics solutions for Formula One — has formed a joint venture with Tus-Wind to develop and supply performance-improving blade retrofits (right).
Anakata has been working with TORC for the past year and has installed its technology at Chinese onshore wind farms. This has demonstrated a potential 6% annual energy increase on onshore turbines with 1.5-2.2MW turbines using Aerodyn 40.3-metre blades, according to the company.
Six other UK companies have signed memorandums of understanding with TORC to develop collaborative projects for the Chinese market, following a virtual ceremony hosted in Yantai City in Shandong province.
The companies are the Aleron Group, Blueprint Subsea, Logan Energy, Miros Scotland, Reoptimize Systems and Zoex Wave Power. Exeter and Harbin Engineering universities are also also collaborating with TORC.
Scottish start-up Reoptimize aims to use machine learning to improve assessment of wind turbines' performance, while Zoex is seeking opportunities to attach wave energy modules to offshore wind platforms.
