The work was able to begin after investment from Tridos Bank and investment institution Meewind.
Enercon is supplying the 4MW turbine to the ECN Wind Turbine test centre in Wieringermeer in the Netherlands. The German manufacturer entered the project after it acquired Dutch OEM Lagerwey.听
The turbine will be connected to an electrolyser to produce the hydrogen as part of the Duwaal project led by regional development agency Noord-Holland Noord (NHN).
The project developer, Hygro, said it expects the turbine to begin operating by Q2 2021.
It will also look to demonstrate if the electrolysis system is 鈥渟ignificantly more efficient than is currently thought鈥, Hygro said.
Compared to the plans to connect large-scale electrolysis to the electricity grid, much more hydrogen can be generated with a hydrogen turbine, at a much lower cost.
Willem Smelik, Meewind director, said the use of 鈥榞reen鈥 hydrogen is an important element of the Netherland鈥檚 energy transition.
鈥淭his investment shows that we, together with our partners, are taking the lead to enable the industry, as well as the mobility and agricultural sectors to become emission-free.
鈥淲e look forward to the investment decision making process for the next phase of the project, aimed at developing a sustainable and local hydrogen chain," he said.听
