The battery at Finnish developer TuuliWatti’s 21MW Viinamäki wind farm will optimise wind power production, and provide backup and black-start capabilities — recovery from a total or partial grid shutdown.
Saft will supply three of its Intensium Max 20 High Energy Containers, each with a storage capacity of 2.2MWh, and operational lifetime of 15 years.
Portfolio manager for power at TuuliWatti, Tommi Riski, said the energy storage system would help "support grid stability, allowing us to adjust the output of our wind farm immediately".
The Finnish developer commissioned its Viinamäki wind farm in Northern Ostrobothnia, in the country’s north-west earlier this month.
It consists of five Vestas V150-4.2MW turbines with 175-metre cable-stayed towers, which it claims are the tallest all-steel turbine towers in the world.
Vestas and TuuliWatti plan to collect data from the first ten years of operation at the site as part of a research and development project into the towers and to supply information for the towers' product certification.
The developer receives no federal support for the project, and claims the wind farm produces electricity at less than €30/MWh.
