Regulation 'main barrier' to hybridisation, RES claims

HAMBURG 2018: Hybrid projects are being held back by outdated regulations preventing multiple generation sources sharing the same grid connection, according to RES Group's managing director for the UK and Ireland.

Combining wind and solar with storage enables developers to use site infrastructure efficiently and maximise use of the grid connection, Rachel Ruffle explained.

However, she added, regulators require developers to specify what generation source will be connected to the grid at a certain site, but withhold permitting for hybrid projects in the UK.

"It doesn’t make sense from an engineering perspective or a practical perspective," she told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç TV at the Global Wind Summit in Hamburg.

"The regulators don’t move quickly enough (to keep up with developments in energy technology).

"I think it really comes down to the politicians to create a sense of urgency to help the transition."
