Construction at the first of five 140MW projects is expected to begin by the end of the year, with all of the projects due online by 2021.
Local lenders Nedbank and Absa provided the project financing. The total portfolio will cost €1.2 billion, Enel said, with the Italy-based group contributing €230 million to the investment total.
From the portfolio, the Garob, Karusa and Soetwater projects will be build in the Northern Cape province, while the Oyster Bay and Nxuba site are to be located in the Eastern Cape.
Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas is set to supply its V117 model to the Oyster Bay site, and the V136 platform to the the Soetwater and Karusa projects. Nordex, meanwhile will supply its Acciona “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç AW125 models to the Garob and Nxuba developments.
The projects were licenced in the fourth round of South Africa’s renewable energy independent power producer procurement programme (REIPPPP) in April 2015.
Enel operates 520MW of wind and solar capacity in South Africa.
In 2016, the developer completed the 88MW Nojoli project in the Eastern Cape province, followed by the 111MW Gibson Bay site, also in Eastern Cape, in 2017.
Nojoli comprises 44 Vestas V100 2MW turbines, while Gibson Bay has 37 Nordex N117 3MW models.
