The developer, a subsidiary of investment firm Actis and a Mainstream Renewable Power-led consortium, said construction on the west Africa project — Senegal’s first utility-scale wind power site — is due to begin shortly.
A total of 46 3.45MW turbines will be installed by 2020 by Vestas, which has also been named engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.
The US’ Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and EKF, Denmark’s Export Credit Agency, provided project finance loans.
The developer said it expects the project to generate 400 "employment opportunities" and contribute $20m to the local community over the lifetime of the project.
Lekela acquired the rights for the site in June 2016 and received $117.5m funding from the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Lekela has a portfolio of wind and solar projects, across the continent, from South Africa to Egypt, via Ghana and Senegal.
