A total of 262 shipping containers will eventually make their way to the Korat wind project in central Thailand to form a concrete and steel hybrid tower factory.
The factory will be supplied and manned by local workers — bar 25 employees from Germany — and produce 90 hybrid towers.
Shipping will continue until mid-November and the whole plant should be completed in February 2018.
"To better meet the global demand for wind turbine systems with hub heights between 130 and 180 meters, we developed the concept of a mobile production facility," said Max Boegl Wind board member Josef Knitl.
The company currently produces towers from its Sengenthal and Osterroenfeld sites in Germany for the European market.
"For international customers, however, the company chose a different strategy: build a mobile manufacturing plant at the wind turbine site itself and use it to produce concrete elements with local materials and labour.
"This creates added value on site, reduces the cost of material purchases and places significantly less strain on infrastructure compared to heavy transports," the company explained.
