Copel confirms 313MW WEG order

BRAZIL: Local power provider Copel confirmed its 313MW Cutia wind project, under construction in Brazil, will be supplied by local wind turbine manufacturer WEG.

WEG has been producing turbines under license from Northern Power Systems since 2013

The company is supplying a total of 86 2.1MW turbines to the 180.6MW first phase of Cutia, currently being installed.

Copel has chosen the same machine for the 132.3MW second phase.

The contract forms part of WEG's 651MW order book and its plan to corner 20% of Brazil's wind turbine market by 2025.

Since 2013, WEG — traditionally one of Brazil's top power equipment makers — has been producing direct-drive, permanent magnet, full converter turbines, under licence from US manufacturer Northern Power Systems (NPS).

WEG's facility in Jaragua do Sul, southern Brazil, produces 2MW, 2.1MW, 2.2MW and 2.3MW machines.

The company has already completed 92.4MW across four projects in Brazil, all for major power corporations: Bons Ventos da Serra I (23.1MW) for Servtec; Pitombeira (27.3MW) for utility Eletrosul, and Alupar's Catarina (18.9MW) and Goiabeira (23.1MW) projects.
