Inner-array cabling work has begun at the €1.2 billion, 288MW Sandbank offshore wind project, with the first power cable between the monopiles "SB 28C" and "SB 29C" complete, reported project owners Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München.
The 96 kilometers of inner-array cabling from the 72 turbines to the offshore substation will be divided into nine turbine "strings", with every two strings connected to one another to ensure continued turbine operation even in the case of cable damage, the companies stated.
The main contractor for the inner-array cabling is VBMS. The cables are manufactured by JDR Cables in Hartlepool, UK.
Cable-laying vessel Stemat-Spirit is transporting the cable from the UK to the marine construction site and lays them at a depth of 0.6 metres to over one metre.
The cables contain an optical fibre for data exchange between each wind turbine and the offshore substation as well as for remote control and surveillance of the wind farm by the Vattenfall control centre in Esbjerg, Denmark.
The wind farm is expected to be fully commissioned in 2017, delivering electricity to the onshore network via the Sylwin Alpha converter station and Sylwin 1 cable system. 14-Sep-15
Fishermen's Atlantic City Windfarm
The New Jersey Supreme Court is expected to rule in October on whether it will hear the case regarding the Fishermen's Atlantic City Windfarm (FACW) 25MW demonstration project , according to Paul Gallagher, chief operating officer and general counsel of Fishermen's Energy.
"Assuming that they grant certification, we expect oral argument early Q1 2016 with a ruling Q2 2016," he said.
The developer is appealing the state's Board of Public Utilities' (BPU's) denial of a permit for the project, which would be off Atlantic City. The BPU has twice rejected FACW, a decision that an appellate court backed in May. At issue is whether it is a good financial deal for ratepayers. 18-Sep-15
New York
Deepwater Wind has responded to New York City's request for information for new sources of renewable energy.
Deepwater did not propose a specific project, but the developer is planning the 1GW Deepwater ONE project 29 kilometres offshore in Rhode Island Sound.
The project would serve Long Island — part of New York City — and New England.
"The waters off New York City are home to one of the country's best offshore wind resources, and tapping [offshore wind] would do much to help New York City meet its 100-per cent renewables goal — and to launch a new local industry," said Deepwater CEO Jeff Grybowski. 18-Sep-15
