Soil samples will be taken at the six planned locations of the Siemens 3MW turbines that will be installed there.
Developer Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation (LeedCo) said the data would build on surveys carried out in 2013. Completion of the project is expected in the second half of 2018.
UK firm Gardline Geosurvey will carry out the geotechnical surveys partnered by US company DOSECC Exploration Services. Gardline has previously carried out similar surveys off the coast of Maryland, while DOSECC worked on the 30MW Block Island project now under construction near Massachusetts.
Icebreaker will feature gravity-base , developed by Universal Foundation. A mono-bucket foundation uses a monopile tower attached to a bucket structure. It is installed using a suction system, allowing it to anchor to the seabed. The design removes the need for hammering or drilling, reducing noise, time and cost.
