Gamesa wins first Latin American 5MW turbine deal

CHILE: Gamesa has won the first Latin American order for its 5MW turbine to be used at a project on Chiloe Island, Chile.

First order for G128-5MW turbine in Latin America

Gamesa will provide 13 G128-5MW turbines for the San Pedro II project, being developed by Chilean firms Transantartic Energia and Bosques de Chiloe.

Under the turnkey deal, Gamesa has been contracted to build the project. Construction is due to begin in 2016, with completion expected in early 2017.

Last year, Gamesa also built the first 36MW phase of the San Pedro project. It uses the G90-2MW turbine.

Due to the difficult environment of the project, in a mountainous region of the island, Gamesa will manufacture each of the turbine's blades in two pieces. They will be assembled at the project site.

Gamesa's Mexico and Latin American managing director Hipolito Suarez said the deal was the largest the firm has received for the turbine to date.

In October 2013, Gamesa confirmed its first ever order for the G128 from developer TuuliWatti Oy for a 15MW project in Finland, as part of a larger framework agreement.
