The deal is for 48 2.5MW Goldwind 121/2500 low wind turbines to go to at the Golden Valley wind farm project, in Eastern Cape province where annual average wind speed is around 7.6 meters per second.
The turbines will be the first direct drive turbines to be installed in South Africa.
BioTherm Energy won the wind project through tendering. The bidding result was announced on 16 April.
This is the second large supply deal Goldwind has canvassed in South Africa. In January 2011 it contracted to supply the Ethiopian Adama wind project 34 1.5MW turbines.
The company said it partly attributed the new contract to its efforts in wooing the South African market. The company hopes the new deal will consolidate its footing there and help win more orders from other African countries.
Statistics compiled by the Chinese Wind Energy Association show Goldwind had exported a total of 853MW by the end of 2014 to more than 17 countries around the world. The overseas shipments in 2014 were 8.25MW to France and 215MW to Panama.
