EWEA Offshore: Tacke calls for offshore change

EUROPE: The wind industry must move its message beyond climate change and into other areas such as energy security if it is to prosper, said EWEA president and Siemens wind power CEO Markus Tacke.

Tacke was speaking at the opening address for EWEA Offshore 2015. He cited a number of challenges for the offshore sector, including the need for manufacturers to work together and bring down costs.

Talking about the need to communicate the advantages of the sector, Tacke said the industry needed to tell a bigger story than "climate change". He added: "Wind also plays a key part in other areas. A key part is energy security."

Tacke also said there needed to be more unity among manufacturers. He said: "We as an industry must work more closely together. We are competitors in many ways, but in other ways also allies."

He said there needed to be more cost advocacy and best practice. Tacke also said cost reduction was a challenge, adding: "We're a young industry. If we use this youth we can get greater cost reduction."

Among the other speakers was Swedish energy minister Ibrahim Baylan, who said Sweden would be announcing new efforts to fund offshore wind later this year.
