EGYPT: Egypt has name 27 companies and consortia as qualified to build wind power projects up to 50MW each in the first round of a tender for independent power producers.

They include a number of big international players such as Enel Green Power; Sinohydro; ACWA Power; Terna Energy with Taqa; Tata Power; GDF Suez; and Acciona with Swicorp, all awarded 100MW each.

China's Cnood Asia was awarded 20MW, and the remaining 19 entities 50MW apiece. These include regional players such as El Sewedy Electric; Eren with Access Infra Africa; and Mapna International.

The companies can install up to 50MW in any one location. They must establish a project company with capital of at least EGP3.5 million/MW (€400,000) and apply for land-use rights from the New and Renewable Energy Association NREA. Once operating, they will be eligible for a feed-in tariff.

In total, NREA has awarded 1670MW so far. They expect to launch another qualification round soon to reach the target of 2GW.
