Oman appoints consultants for 50MW Harweel project

OMAN: Austrian engineering consultancy ILF Consulting Engineers has been awarded a contract to provide engineering services for Oman's first industrial-scale wind power project.

The project will be located close to the city of Salalah in southern Oman

The 50MW Harweel development, located in the southern Dhofar governate, is being jointly developed by the state-owned Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAECO) and UAE-based renewable clean energy company Masdar.

RAECO and Masdar will also build a 132kV transmission line to connect the plant, which will consist of up to 25 turbines. The project will cost around $125 million (€110 million). Construction is slated to start by the end of the year.

RAECO and Masdar have also issued tenders for legal advisory services and to engineer, procure and construct the plant.

The plant will help reduce Oman's reliance on fossil fuels and meet the country's increasing energy demand.
