V164 breaks production record

DENMARK: MHI-Vestas' V164-8MW turbine has broken the record for the most amount of electricity produced in 24 hours by generating 192MWh.

The V164 8MW turbine produced 192MWh in 24 hours

The V164 was tested across 6-7 October at a site in northern Denmark. MHI-Vestas said wind speeds averaged approximately 11m/s in the 24-hour period. The data was measured by Denmark's Technical University, which owns the test centre.

A prototype of the turbine has been installed at the Danish test centre and has been operating with over 90% availability since.

MHI-Vestas CEO Jens Tommerup said: "Our main focus now is continuing to document the performance of the turbine to measure the power curve and the power quality in order to receive type certification."

It is the largest turbine currently in existence and has already been contracted for use at Dong Energy's in the Irish Sea.

A is set to be installed to continue testing before MHI-Vestas gains a type certificate next year. Series production is slated to begin next year.
