The turbine was hit by multiple lightning strikes more than three years ago, but has continued to function. However, project operator Vattenfall said the blade replacement is now necessary in order to secure the long-term performance of the turbine.
A2Sea has provided the vessel for the work that Vestas carried out on the V90-3MW blade.
The blade was removed and the replacement fitted on the same day. The damaged blade will be delivered by the jackup vessel to Esbjerg in Denmark, where it will be assessed and repaired. If it is deemed to be beyond repair, it will be recycled and replaced.
Vattenfall said that inspections of the blades on the 29 other turbines had not shown any significant lightning damage.
The developer is set to start construction on a 49.5MW extension of the current 90MW project next year, with the installation of 15 V112-3.3 turbines.
