Vestas wins first De-Icing deal

FINLAND: Vestas will supply turbines using its new De-Icing System (VDS) to the 16.5MW Puuska II project after being awarded the deal by developer Rajakiiri Oy.

The De-Icing system can be installed on Vestas' V112-3.3MW turbines

Vestas will deliver five V112-3.3MW turbines to the project near Tornio, northwest Finland. The order includes a six-year service deal once the project is commissioned, due to be in the second quarter of 2015.

It will be the first commercial project to feature the Danish manufacturer's De-Icing system, designed to remove ice the blades. Ice on blades can affect power production by up to 20%.

The VDS system uses a flow of warm air in the blade to melt any ice that has formed on the blade.

A prototype of the system was installed on a turbine in Canada in 2012.

Rajakiiri Oy is a wind power consortium made up of Finnish energy and industrial firms EPV Energia Oy, Oy Katterno Kraft Ab, Outikumpu Oyj and SSAB.
