DNV GL validates Flidar

UK: DNV GL has validated an offshore Flidar located at Mainstream Renewable's 450MW Neart na Gaoithe project.

The Flidar can progress to stage two of the Carbon Trust roadmap

The Floating Lidar records wind speeds and different altitudes using laser technology. 15.5km off the Fife Ness Coast, east Scotland.

DNV GL measured the floating device against the ORE Catapult met mast located off Blyth, northeast England over three months.

The device had previously been tested after being and marked against two independent offshore met masts.

Flidar is a joint venture between Belgium advisory firm 3E and construction company Offshore Wind Assistance (part of the Deme group).

The independent validation by DNV GL means the Flidar can move forward to stage 2 (pre-commercial) of the Carbon Trust's offshore wind accelerator roadmap.

The roadmap outlines stages for the Flidar needs to reach to become commercially accepted as an alternative to installing met masts.
