Siemens' direct drive turbine has a 154-diametre rotor and was only certified by DNV GL at the . Turbine installation is set to be completed in the first half of 2015, with commissioning due later that year.

The turbine, with a 120-metre blade diameter, was previously been installed at the Gunfleet Sands demonstration project, also off the UK's east coast. The turbine was also tested at the Hunterston Test Centre for Offshore Wind in Scotland last year with the full 75-metre blades.

Westermost Rough is located 8 kilometres off England's north-east coast and is jointly owned by Dong (50%), the Green Investment Bank (25%) and the Marubeni Corporation (25%).
