Siemens 6MW turbine certified

GERMANY: Siemens has been granted type certification by DNV GL for its new 6MW direct-drive offshore turbine.

Siemens 6MW turbine has already been installed at Gunfleet Sands

The German manufacturer said that the certification is a "further step in ramping up the serial production" of the turbine.

DNV GL was given access to the engineering facilities in Brande, Denmark, as well as the testing facilities at Østerild, Denmark, and Hunterston, UK

The certification of the SWT-6.0-154 turbine covers it for a 25-year lifetime, five years longer than Siemens had designed the machine to last.

The turbine is set to go into serial production imminently, with the 210MW Westermost Rough offshore wind farm set to be the first to feature the turbine in a commercial capacity. This project is due to go online in 2015.

Two of the turbines have already been installed on a demonstration project at Gunfleet Sands off England's south-east coast and have been operating since last year.
