AMSC claimed the new machine would produce almost 20% more electricity than the 93-metre version.
It is available in 90 and 100-metre hub heights and can use a concrete, steel or hybrid tower. It also uses a doubly-fed-induction generator.
The AMSC 2MW design is licensed out to a number of manufacturers, including Indian company Inox Wind. Last month AMSC signed a $40 million deal with Inox to supply control systems.
While Inox is licensed to manufacture the majority of the turbine itself, AMSC reserves the right to provide the control systems to its licensees.Speaking at the launch, AMSC CEO Daniel McGahn said: "We believe that AMSC's new low wind speed turbine makes it possible to achieve a low cost of energy at the low wind speed sites that were previously inaccessible or not economically compelling.
"The new low-wind speed design is expected to lower cost of energy by as much as 12% compared to previous AMSC designs, increasing its competitiveness with traditional fossil fuels."
