Under the Gridstor project DNV GL will work with the industry to create an open-source best practice that is aimed at creating an industry standardisation for storage.
"The Gridstor initiative was spurred by the realisation that the energy industry lacked a comprehensive framework covering all elements relevant for grid-connected energy storage systems," the company said.
DNV GL said that the need for such a project was revealed by its energy storage survey conducted in January, which explored existing energy storage standards. Gridstor will be launched in January 2015 with 15 unnamed partners, including suppliers, end users and regulators involved with storage systems.
This consortium will work on a recommended practice focusing on three main aspects of grid-connected energy storage: system safety, operation and performance.
The global transition towards the integration of more renewable energy in grid systems presents challenges. Grid-connected energy storage balances the peaks and troughs of variable sources, and is "becoming a vital element in the design of electrical networks," DNV GL said.
