The project, which could become the first offshore wind farm in US waters, will cost around $60 million and involves laying a 20-mile (32-kilometre) cable from Block Island that would make landfall at Scarborough State Beach in Narragansett.
National Grid will pay around $9.5 million for property options, surveys and permits.
Last month, the 30MW test offshore project moved a step closer to reality, with state authorities offering no objection to the plans. Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council, the leading permitting agency for the project, is still to hold a public hearing on the plans, but has issued this preliminary judgement.
Deepwater intends to use the 30MW Block Island project to provide a test case for an offshore wind farm of up to 200 turbines in Rhode Island federal waters following its victory last week in an auction for leasing rights there.
