The two companies have now abandoned their negotiations over forming a partnership to take control of the network after they failed to reach agreement on the terms.
The current operator of the grid, Energienetze Ostfriesland (ENO), was open to Enercon taking on its operation, but had stipulated that it could only do so in conjunction with EWE.
Since the negotiations between the companies came to nothing, Enercon will not take up control of the network.
However, a spokesperson for Enercon did say that it would decide on a reapplication for the contract "in due course".
Enercon's headquarters and much of its manufacturing base are based in the town of Aurich.
As a result of the negotiations, Enercon and EWE have agreed to cooperate in research projects to try to find solutions to the region's energy issues.
This news is not related to Enercon's existing agreement with public works company Stadtwerke Aurich for the join operation of the grid in the town of Aurich. Preparations are currently under way for the purchase of this grid.
