Isle of Man takes step towards offshore wind

ISLE OF MAN: The Isle of Man government has issued a request for expressions of interest from companies interested in developing offshore wind and tidal projects in its territorial waters.

The Island's territorial waters extend 19 kilometres from its shores
The self-governing British Crown dependency in the Irish Sea said it expects to receive a potential return of around £5 million (EUR 6.1 million) a year from leasing its seabed.

The department of infrastructure, the department of environment, food and agriculture and the treasury, are working with offshore wind consultants Source Low Carbon to work towards tendering for future offshore wind farms.

"Consultation will continue with all stakeholders potentially affected by the development of any wind farms in Isle of Man territorial waters to avoid any adverse impacts," said minister for economic development John Shimmin.

The government has a plan to become a renewable energy hub and to export ten times as much low-carbon electricity to the UK as the entire island consumes in a year.

No timescale has been specified for interested parties to approach the government.
