Atlantic Wind Connection aims to assist businesses in tapping into the link which could carry 3GW of electricity and could be used to connect and deliver power from offshore wind sites along the New Jersey coast.
The electric transmission system will be buried underground and under the seabed, and will connect northern and southern New Jersey to address problems of higher electricity costs.
The link remains in the permitting phase and is expected to be built in three stages.
The first stage's engineering, procurement and construction contractor is Bechtel. Construction could start in 2016 or 2017 with the first stage becoming operational in 2020 or 2021.
Atlantic Wind Connection is led by transmission company Trans-Elect with Atlantic Grid Development as the project developer. Google, Bregal Energy, Marubeni Corporation and Belgian transmission operator Elia are sponsors.
