Walney 3 plans accepted for examination

UK: The Planning Inspectorate has accepted for examination Dong Energy's proposals for extending its Walney offshore wind project.

Turbine being installed at Walney

Dong submitted its proposal for the 145-square-kilometre site off the Cumbrian coast in the Irish Sea on 28 June.

It aims to install up to 207 turbines with a total capacity of 750MW, effectively trebling the number of turbines and amount of power generated at Walney.

Dong’s proposal includes work on offshore and onshore infrastructure, and routing a cable from the coast to a new substation to be built in Lancashire.

"After careful consideration we have decided on behalf of the Secretary of State that the application submitted by Dong Wind met the required tests set out in the legislation to be accepted for examination," said Planning Inspectorate chief executive Sir Michael Pitt.
