US gov't commissions GL Garrad Hassan to study offshore wind

UNITED STATES: The US Department of Energy has commissioned GL Garrad Hassan to undertake an analysis of the country's ability to develop its offshore wind resources

The work will take the form of two projects. The first will look at existing port facilities and what would be necessary to ensure they are able to cater for any future offshore wind industry needs. This report will consider technical requirements for assembly and construction of offshore projects as well as also whether ports could accommodate the needs of an offshore wind servicing industry.

The second study will look at the costs of installation and maintenance.

GL will be granted $500,000 and $200,000 for the studies, with the funds coming from a $43 million Department of Energy offshore wind programme aimed at lowering the cost of energy of offshore wind.
