Summing up the activities undertaken by its renewables business last year, GL Group makes specific mention in its 2011 annual report of Garrad Hassan’s first market assessment of high-altitude wind energy (HAWE) systems.
Such systems are yet to be deployed commercially and are defined as boasting kites, parachutes, rotating balloons and/or fixed wings, tethered to floating offshore platforms. They devices would be designed to fly at altitudes between 200 metres and 20 kilometres.
Other 2011 highlights include expansion in staff numbers for another arm of GL Group's renewables division, GL Renewables Certification. Staffing levels rose in China, North America and India. There are plans to open a GL Renewables Certification UK office this year.
Also in the works for late 2012 will be a revised version of guidelines for the certification of offshore wind turbines. GL Renewables Certification has been commissioned to certify Siemens’ 6MW direct drive offshore turbine.
In 2011, GL Group saw its revenue grow by 5.4%, to €767 million. No information is provided in the annual report about the size of its renewables business.
