Six innovative trimarans being built by Norwegian shipyard, Fjellstrand, will be classified by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) under its newly published classification rules.
The six Windservers are due to enter service in March 2013. They are the first vessels ordered by Esbjerg-based World Marine Offshore, a new entrant to the offshore wind operation and maintenance (O&M) market.
Commercialisation of the Windserver’s innovative design was supported by the UK’s Carbon Trust, which facilitated an extensive programme of tank testing.
In May, GL was the first classification body to issue rules for offshore wind crew boats and service craft, aimed at helping vessel designers meet industry standards. Since issuing the rules, GL has received more than ten new commercial enquiries, a spokesperson told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Offshore.
GL’s involvement in the offshore wind vessel market includes classification of some of the sector’s largest vessels. These include new turbine installation vessels, such as: Swire’s Pacific Orca, built by Samsung Heavy Industries; HGO Infra Sea Solutions’ Innovation, built by Polish shipyard Crist; and RWE Innogy’s Victoria Mathias.
