The first commercial-scale deployment of Siemens' new 6MW offshore wind turbine will be at Westermost Rough, developer Dong Energy has confirmed.
The 210MW wind farm off England's Yorkshire coast will be fully commissioned during the first half of 2015, it was announced yesterday.
The schedule for Westermost Rough was disclosed almost immediately after news came of successful installation of two Siemens 6MW turbines at Dong's Gunfleet Sands 3 test site. Onshore testing of the 6MW model is already under way in Denmark.
Dong will deploy the first 35 units of its 300-strong order for Siemens' new, 6MW model in waters off Hull. The next question is whether Siemens will confirm its intention to build a nacelle production and pre-assembly facility at the port of Hull.
Offshore construction work for Westermost Rough looks set to begin as soon as Dong's 389MW West of Duddon Sands wind farm is complete.
During construction of Westermost Rough, Dong is expected to maintain a base at Grimsby, from which it has operated during construction of the Lincs project.
Dong looks set to see its operational assets pass the 2GW mark, barring any sizeable divestments by the Danish company, which is under pressure to improve profitability.
