The job of installing about 88km of 33kV inter-array cables at Baltic 2 has been awarded to Siem Offshore Contractors (SOC). The contract's value exceeds $100m (€74m). The work will take two years and is due to begin immediately.
The 288MW Baltic 2 project is being developed by German utility, EnBW. Its deal with SOC will see the subsea cable firm install the cables and undertake pre-installation route and boulder clearance and pre-lay trenching operations. SOC will also carry out post-installation termination and testing work.
SOC's position in the German offshore wind cable installation market appears to be strengthening. Last year, it won two significant contracts. It was commissioned by transmission system operator, TenneT, to install two 155kV high voltage AC cables linking RWE's Innogy Nordsee 1 project with the DolWin Beta offshore transformer station. The work is due for completion in 2014. Meanwhile, E.ON contracted SOC to install 101km of 33kV inter-array cables for its Amrumbank West offshore wind farm, with the work scheduled for next year.
Other offshore wind projects carried out by SOC include work on Walney 1, in 2010-11, and Arklow Bank off the Irish coast, in 2003-04.
