Danish offshore wind capacity will top the 1GW mark today. The milestone will be reached when Anholt's thirty-sixth 3.6MW turbine is grid-connected.
The 400MW Anholt is being built by Dong Energy in the Kattegat. Its 129.6MW of operational capacity to date will supplement the 871MW that is already online in Danish waters. Dong owns 50% of the project.
Achieving 1GW of offshore capacity places Denmark in second place globally. Denmark has just over 450 grid-connected offshore turbines in place, across 13 offshore wind farms. The UK leads the way, with 2.9GW of capacity at the end of 2012 and 1,000 offshore turbines installed.
Once completed later this year, Anholt will become Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm. Its 111 Siemens 3.6MW turbines and 400MW of capacity will supply around 4% of Denmark’s electricity consumption. Total Danish offshore wind capacity will then be just under 1.3GW, from 516 turbines. A further significant capacity expansion is planned in Danish waters by 2020.
