Siemens Wind and Dong Energy have signed a deal that will see the turbine manufacturer supply 154 of its 6MW machines for the developer's three Gode Wind projects in German waters. Installation of the first turbines is due to take place in 2015.
The framework agreement between the two dominant players in the European offshore wind industry follows last year's announcement that Dong will buy 300 Siemens 6MW turbines for its UK offshore wind pipeline. The first UK project to feature the Siemens 6MW machine will be Westermost Rough.
Dong acquired the Gode Wind projects last year from PNE Wind. Meanwhile, Siemens' efforts to commercialise its 6MW direct-drive designs have been making good progress, with an onshore test underway in Denmark of a prototype boasting a 154m rotor diameter – the design that will be deployed at the Gode Wind sites.
Two prototypes with slightly smaller rotor diameters are being tested offshore in UK waters, at Dong's Gunfleet Sands 3 site.
Commenting on the deal, Dong's executive vice president, Samuel Leupold, said: "With these agreements we are stepping up our commitment to the German offshore wind market. We are already building our first wind farm in Germany and maturing a number of other projects, including the Gode Wind projects on which we plan to use the supplies under these agreements".
Dong's German pipeline includes Borkum Riffgrund 1, which will be powered by Siemens 3.6MW turbines.
